Aside from the possibility of loss of life or human injury, there are two economic consequences of fire which stand out: - firstly, that a large percentage of companies that suffer serious damage as a result of a fire will go into liquidation within a short period of time.  Secondly, the rising cost on industry for fires in the workplace in terms of increased insurance premiums.

In order to ensure standards improve, Fire Authorities have now been given an express duty to enforce the Fire Precautions Regulations throughout their area.  They have the power to visit and inspect any business premises to ensure that it has made adequate fire precautions.

When inspecting your premises one of the first things that the Fire Officer will ask to see is your Fire Risk Assessment.  A central theme of today's legislation remains adequate staff training and recording, so as to ensure that personnel are aware of fire risks and informed of how to respond should a fire break out.
